How to Keep Your Bedding Clean as a Pet Owner
ffects in the form of hair, dirt and unwanted stains and marks on your bedding. However, with the right habits and the use of appropriate products, you can help keep your bedding fresh and fur-free.
Read on for six top tips on how to keep bedding clean when you have pets, from adhering to regular washing habits and choosing the right linens to grooming your pets and introducing boundaries in the bedroom.
1. Choose the Right Bedding
Selecting the right bedding makes all the difference as a pet owner. Look for materials that resist fur, stains and odours. Fabrics such as microfibre and tightly-woven cotton are less likely to trap animal fur and are easier to clean. Try and avoid fabrics such as fleece, flannel or velvet as hair can easily cling to them.
2. Introduce Blankets & Bed Coverings
If you can, train your pet to sleep on a designated spot on the bed. You can cover your bedding with a washable blanket or bed throw which can then act as a barrier between them and your duvet cover. A blanket can also help keep fur in the one place, protects your main bedding from stains and is easy to regularly wash.
3. Wash Your Bedding Regularly
A build up of pet hair, body oils and allergens can dirty your bedding fast, so it’s best to wash it at least once a week (and more if time allows and your pet sleeps directly on your bed).
Washing bedding in hot water (at least 60°c) kills dust mites, bacteria and helps diminish lingering odours. Invest in quality detergents that break down organic stains and consider hypoallergenic and fragrance-free options – ideal for pet owners.

4. Keep Your Mattress and Pillows Clean Too
A clean foundation helps your entire bed stay fresher for longer so it’s important not to forget about the bedding under your sheets as well. To ensure longevity for your bedding, pillow and mattress protectors are vital to a long-lasting sleep set-up. Remember to wash and replace them when needed and be sure to vacuum clean your mattress to remove any hair and dust build-up every couple of months or so.
5. Regularly Groom Your Pets
Keeping your pets clean will ultimately keep your bedding clean too. Regular grooming will prevent mess before your four-legged friends can reach the sheets and will result in fewer allergens and less hair on the bed.
Some grooming techniques to consider:
- Brush your pet daily to reduce shedding
- Clean paws after walks and time spent outdoors
- Bath your pet every few weeks with a gentle pet shampoo
- Clean ears and keep nails trimmed to prevent dirt buildup
6. Train Your Pet to Keep Boundaries
While cuddling up with your fur babies in bed is great, setting boundaries for them helps preserve your bedding for longer. If you can, teach your pet to wait to be invited up on the bed before hopping up, or encourage them to rest and sleep in their own pet bed close by. This is a great way to keep your pets close while reducing the amount of mess and shedding on your own bed.
Keeping your bedding clean as a pet owner doesn’t mean having to give up sharing the bed with a dog or a cat. All that’s needed are just a few smart habits, combining regular washing, good grooming and introducing protective layers - and you can enjoy fresh, cosy nights at home with your furry friend, without the mess and any unwelcome odours.
